5 Star Home Care understands how difficult it is to watch a loved one suffer from dementia, as it can gradually diminish their ability to communicate, to recognize family and friends, and to take care of themselves and their daily needs.

Research has suggested using creativity through art therapy – drawing, music, sculpting, etc. as a calming technique for those suffering from Alzheimer’s. This gives them an outlet and allows family to interpret this method of communication through self-expression.

While it is advised to consult a trained professional, as they are skilled at using these techniques, anyone can try it. When connecting through music, choose something that is familiar and enjoyable. When art therapy is used, be sure to check for toxic ingredients, and ensure that any materials used are safe. Make sure that this process is fun, but also that it is not demeaning or overly childlike.

“The loss of language doesn’t mean the loss of the desire to express oneself. In fact, the part of the brain responsible for creativity is one of the last to be affected by the disease,” the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memories in the Making® art program states.

5 Star Home Care Owner Kenny Higdon says, “My heart goes out to anyone suffering with Alzheimer’s, as well as their families. 5 Star Home Care is here to help by taking care of bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, preparing meals, and transportation so that their family is able to focus on reaching out and staying connected to their loved one.”
